Here’s what the lady of the house wants you to know :
I love my house because it is a home. “Home” means a retreat to privacy and solitude On the other hand our house has a floor plan that makes entertaining as many as 150 friends easy. An open kitchen with lots of Corian counter space with a large island provides plenty of surface workspace. The island has a dual fuel drop in range. The burners are gas and the oven is electric convection. In addition, a Jennaire wall mounted gas oven is great for baking bread. A large warming tray makes hot foods prepared ahead of mealtime always served hot. Its also a great proofing oven for breads.
We enjoy the large master bedroom with its cathedral ceiling. Two gas log fireplaces give a warm cozy feel to the rooms in the winter. Built in bookshelves have plenty of space for books and lighted displays. A built in hot tub on the third level has a fabulous view of the mountains. Tall windows let in lots of natural light that makes houseplants thrive.
Outside the house I like the variety of apples for pies and in the fall, for apple butter. I spend a few minutes every day watching the koi in the water garden. Waterfall sounds quiet my spirit. A wildflower garden feeds my eyes full of beauty all summer. A big variety of birds and small animals attracted by feeders and the waterfall keep us entertained. An owl box permanently attached to a tall maple tree has been occupied each year by a family of screech owls. All of these provide many opportunities for prizewinning photographs.
And, now the man’s perspective:
I knew I had found my dream house when I walked into the giant living room with the 19 foot creadial beamed ceiling with a wall of windows and a 9foot wide, floor to ceiling stone fireplace. I had always pictured living in such a place with the fireplace, a good book, coffee and watching the snow fall. Later as we spent our first night in the master bedroom during a rain we heard the sound of the rain on the skylights. We delighted in unexpected joy at this wonderful room to plan the many adventures in our new life.
I was also very surprised as I walked our land to learn that we had Heritage apple trees that had been grown in these mountains since the early settlers arrived from Europe. I had plenty of room to create my vegetable garden, build my work shop, and a water garden. Inside the house my wife designed her perfect kitchen, and we modernized the 3 full baths.
In our 16 years in this very secluded, private, home at 3200 feet we continued to build, plant and remodel our very own paradise that is only 2 miles from IH 40, extensive restaurants, grocery store, and urgent care center. My wife , the writer, named our home Halacon Ridge”. Thru the years our children and grandchildren came to visit and explore the trails, water falls, winding roads of the parks and forests of western North Carolina. I enjoyed the gardens, harvesting blueberrys, blackberries, cherries, apples from our 2 acres of flat lawn. We both watched and photographed the many birds, animals and kaleidoscope of colors with the change of seasons.
We did not know anyone when we moved here. We were very surprised to find such a divers, vibrant and world traveled group of residents in Haywood County. One of the treasures is the nationally ward winning HART theater which provides outstanding live theater year round.
I discovered Haywood Hikers and traveled the many miles of trails in the Smokey Mountains National Park and Pisgah National forest. My wife started her lifetime dream of becoming a writer. She immediately discovered the many writing groups and events. These groups and friend we made had a tradition of having “pot luck” gathering. Our estate, with its easy access and space to park 35 cars became the destination for these events. We have hosted over 100 guests that could comfortably party in our decks, 3 floors of space, 3 bath rooms, and our oversized garage with doors on both ends. My wifes gourmet kitchen with 2 ovens, warming trays, offered a perfect staging area for the many dishes. The garage became the bar and dance floor.
My passion is sunsets; I have enjoyed them all over the world. To enjoy the best view I constructed 100 steps up the hill, behind my shop. My grandchildren help me carry the large timbers where we constructed an old fashion porch swing. Today in my 80th year I know no greater pleasure than watching the sun sink behind the ridges while painting the sky with a vivid display of natures goodbye to the day. I relaxed in my swing with my coffee or bourbon, and reflect on my life, my family and all the joys I have experienced on Halcyon Ridge.
